The Arcane Arts (often referred to simply as Magic) is an umbrella term encompassing any supernatural phenomenon utilized by the denizens of Rodinia. These phenomena manifest in a wide variety of forms, including but not limited to projecting damaging elemental attacks, manipulating physical substances, casting restorative healing spells, and granting physical enhancements.

As the mainstream standard of magic in Rodinia, the Arcane Arts are an innate ability inherent to native-born individuals. The vast majority of the population relies on this system for both everyday conveniences and warfare.

Mechanics of Resonance

[edit]

To perform the Arcane Arts, a practitioner must utilize Lumite as a medium. The caster must "resonate" their own innate frequency with the raw magical energy drawn from the Lumite.

This ability to resonate is highly personal and unpredictable. A person's magical affinity and capacity are strictly influenced by uncontrollable factors such as physiology, genetics, and race. Because this resonance is a fundamental, biological trait, an individual's base magical affinity cannot be altered through study, training, or willpower. You are simply born with what you have.

Conjurers and the Importance of Training

[edit]

While training cannot change a person's innate resonance, it is absolutely essential for those who wish to use the Arcane Arts in professional or combat capacities. Practitioners who achieve advanced proficiency and rely on magic as their primary combat method are known as Conjurers.

For Conjurers, rigorous training serves two vital purposes:

  1. Efficiency: Learning to maximize the output of their spells while minimizing the drain on their personal mana reserves.
  2. Control and Safety: Maintaining a stable connection to the volatile energy of Lumite.

If a Conjurer loses control of their resonance, the magical backlash can be devastating. Consequences of a failed spell or overdrawn mana pool range from mild internal self-injury to catastrophic explosions and loss of life.

The Grand Sanctuary Tier System

[edit]

Institutions of magical learning, most notably the Grand Sanctuary, officially categorize proficiency in the Arcane Arts into three distinct tiers:

  • Medium Tier: The vast majority of the Rodinian populace falls into this category. Medium-tier users possess a basic understanding of the Arcane Arts and can perform standard everyday spells or rudimentary combat magic.
  • Lower Tier: A much smaller demographic. Individuals in this tier are limited to incredibly weak rudimentary applications, or are entirely unable to master any Arcane Arts at all. This lack of ability is usually due to personal physiological reasons, such as a severe birth defect.
  • Top Tier: Only a select exceptionally gifted few ever reach this pinnacle of magical mastery. Top-tier conjurers possess devastating power and supreme control, capable of wiping out entire armies or bending the laws of physics. Notable examples include the "Crimson Sage" Erwith Plamya and the former Eclipse Overseer Estella Aria.

Racial Variations and Affinities

[edit]

Because the Arcane Arts are shaped by biological resonance, proficiency and expression vary drastically across different races in Rodinia.

For example, Demonkind, as one of the oldest races on the continent, have had extensive contact with Lumite for countless generations. Consequently, their biology has heavily adapted to it, granting them a terrifyingly strong natural affinity for the Arcane Arts. Rather than casting external spells, the warriors of the frozen North such as the Varyags and the Nords channel their resonance inward. They combine the Arcane Arts with their ancient bloodlines to perform Totem Awakenings, which physically transforming themselves into massive, magically-enhanced beasts (such as Werebears or Werewolves). By contrast, not all races are biologically adept at standard Arcane Arts. Elves possess a hyper-sensitivity to Lumite, making direct resonance highly uncomfortable or dangerous for them. Instead of the Arcane Arts, Elven societies primarily utilize Spirit Blessings—a completely different discipline classified by scholars as Witchcraft.

Trivia

[edit]
  • Asep Muhammad Ridwan, who possesses zero Lumite in his blood and is therefore biologically incapable of resonance, uses the "birth defect" excuse to explain his inability to cast magic to the locals
