The Ardenian Civil War was a devastating domestic military conflict fought between 986 and 988 of the Radiant Calendar. The war was sparked by deep-seated succession rivalries, political corruption, and the suspicious death of King Sigismer.

The conflict concluded with the rise of Crown Prince Finlay to the position of Prince Regent, followed by a purge of some Ardenia's noble class to secure the nation's sovereignty against foreign intervention.

Causes of the Conflict

[edit]

The root causes of the civil war trace back to the political division created after the Ardenian War of Independence. King Sigismer's decision to marry the Albion noblewoman and Paladin; Lady Boudica Gaderia Victoria, and crown her as his "Queen" alienated the traditional nobility.

Two powerful opposing factions emerged within the royal court:

  • The Old Nobility: Harboring deep distrust of the foreign Albion influence, these families supported Sigismer's first wife, Maria, in secret.
  • The New Nobility: These rising noble families heavily favored Queen Boudica and her daughter, Princess Adreana, to secure closer ties and lucrative trade routes with the Albion Empire.

As court tension reached an unbearable peak, administrative corruption ran rampant. The instability culminated when King Sigismer was found dead in his bed under highly suspicious circumstances.

Outbreak of War and Succession Crisis

[edit]

Immediately following Sigismer's death, the old and new noble factions accused each other of regicide. The dispute rapidly escalated from political deadlock into outright armed conflict. In the initial wave of urban warfare and assassinations, both Maria and Boudica were killed.

With the royal lineage in disarray, King Sigismer's ambitious older brother Duke Forlon moved to seize the vacant throne for himself.

Finlay's Counter-Campaign

[edit]

The 19-year-old Crown Prince Finlay refused to submit to Duke Forlon's coup. Rallying the loyalist elements of the Royal Army, Finlay waged a two-year campaign against his uncle. Finlay's military strength and briliant tactical acumen eventually crushed Forlon's coalition, resulting in the death of the Duke and the reclamation of the capital.

The Purges and Aftermath

[edit]

Upon securing the throne, Finlay declined to be formally crowned King, declaring that the unstable state of Ardenia required him to rule as Prince Regent instead.

To prevent future civil wars and foreign exploitation, Finlay executed a comprehensive purge of the corrupt aristocracy. He targeted both old and new noble families who had conspired with the Albion Empire or the Holy Empire of Rodinia against the crown and Ardenia as nation-state.

This purge resulted in:

  • The absolute extinction of several historic Ardenian lineages, most notably House Valente.
  • The centralization of military and economic authority directly under the Regency.
  • The forced exile or displacement of surviving noble descendants, many of whom joined mercenary organizations like the Castalia Mercenary Company or turned to outlaw lives.
