Adeline is a supporting character in the Smoke of Revolution series. Originally an ordinary civilian from the port city of Merlesia, she is thrust into leadership during the devastating Merlesia Incident. Following the death of her father, she assumes the responsibility of guiding hundreds of displaced Merlesian refugees to safety.
Throughout the series, Adeline undergoes significant growth, transforming from a civilian survivor into a highly capable leader of the Roake Resistance.
Appearance
- Attire: Adeline wears practical, durable travel clothing suited for a refugee on the move. This includes an off-white long-sleeved chemise under a dark brown laced underbust corset, a tan-colored tiered skirt with a subtle plaid trim, and sturdy leather boots.
- Accessories: She wears a light-colored protective scarf draped around her neck to guard against the cold and dust. A leather harness and belt hold her gear, including a distinct bronze lantern hanging from her hip.
- Features: She has long, dark brown hair tied back in a loose ponytail, and warm brown eyes that often reflect a mixture of heavy weariness and fierce determination.
Personality
Adeline is defined by her profound selflessness and sense of responsibility.
- Leadership and Resolve: When the lives of her people are threatened, she is unyielding. She refuses to cower to thugs or tyrants, famously standing alone to defend refugee supply carts in Merlesia.
- Practicality: She lacks the romanticized views of war held by noble-born commanders. To Adeline, war is a hollow tragedy of starvation, disease, and death.
- Inner Fragility: While she projects a calm facade to keep her people from panicking, she carries immense grief and trauma. She deeply mourns the loss of her father andBernie, often bottling up her emotions until she is alone.
Biography
Volume 1: Smoke of Revolution
Adeline is first introduced at the East Gate Plaza of Merlesia during the city's bloody riot. Having lost her father Gustav, she takes charge of the panicked civilian refugees. When a local thug named Adrian attempts to rob their food carts, Adeline refuses to yield, shooting him in the shoulder with her crossbow.
As the situation escalates, fortunately, Zachary Valente's Castalia Mercenaries arrived in time to help her. To secure their escape, Adeline demonstrates remarkable battlefield awareness by executing the thug leader with a headshot, sparking a successful breakout. Later, after staying in Loriana for some times, she decided to lead the refugees toward the Roake territory to seek shelter before the onset of winter.
Volume 2: Fragile Peace
In Roake, the situation quickly deteriorates as the Children of the Eclipse cult establishes control over the mines. Adeline and the Princess lady-in-waiting, Brenda, organize a desperate resistance in the West District.
Trapped in a siege with dwindling food and poisoned wells, Adeline is pushed to her physical and emotional limits. Her hope is rekindled when Asep infiltrates the district to find her, promising that a Coalition army is coming. During the final Battle of Roake, Adeline leads her militia alongside the Coalition, successfully liberating the city.
Relationship with Asep
Adeline shares a deep, unspoken bond with Asep. During his mission to find her in the Roake safehouse, Asep drops his usual cynical mercenary persona to offer her genuine comfort and reassurance.
Following the victory at Roake, Asep confesses his feelings to her on a quiet hill overlooking the city. Although Adeline reciprocates his feelings, she selflessly declines to enter a relationship immediately, stating:
"I want to, believe me, I do. More than anything. But I can't be selfish. Not now. Not when so many people are depending on me."
— Adeline to Asep
Asep, understanding her duty, promises to wait for her while she leads the reconstruction of the city.
Equipment
- Crossbow: Her primary weapon during the Merlesia breakout and early days in Roake.
- Type-2 Rapid-Fire Arbalest: A highly advanced, alchemically-powered prototype designed by Treste Comte Mordeau and Asep, which she during the final defense of Roake.
- Signature Lantern: Worn on her hip, serving as a practical tool for navigation and a symbol of hope for her refugees.
Trivia
- Estella Aria, the high-ranking Eclipse sorceress, recognized Adeline's strong-willed yet fragile nature. In her final moments before her execution, Estella asked Adeline to "take care of" Asep.
- Bernie, a former bandit leader who protected the refugees, acted as a father figure to Adeline. He was a close friend of her late father, Gustav. His death during the defense of the Western Keeps left a profound impact on her.
