The Holy Empire of Rodinia is a massive theocratic superpower that dominates a vast portion of Euvros. Deeply intertwined with the Papal States, the Empire is a complex political entity characterized by immense divine magic, strict religious dogma, and a convoluted power-sharing system between the secular nobility and the Radiant Church.
Geography & Territories
The Holy Empire is vast and culturally diverse, but its core power is divided into two primary spheres of influence:
Saxonia
The secular heart of the Empire. Saxonia is a sprawling territory divided into numerous duchies, counties, and principalities ruled by noble families. It forms the industrial and agricultural backbone of the Empire.
- Weimar: The secular capital of the Holy Empire and the traditional seat of the Emperor.
- Elector Regions: The land is governed by the Kurfürsten (Elector Princes), powerful dukes who hold the right to choose the next Emperor. One notable ruling family is House Wittelsberg, which governs the Duchy of Brimmonn.
- Sub-Regions: Saxonia encompasses various distinct cultural regions, including Alemann and Pomeran.
- Laasdorp: A well-known town in Saxonia with a high population of Caprine Beastfolk, renowned for their integration into the Empire's textile and economic machine.
Gallia
Gallia is the direct domain of the Papal States. Rather than being ruled by secular dukes, it is governed by high-ranking clergymen and Bishops.
- Avagnon: The Holy City and the absolute seat of power for the Papacy. It houses the Grand Sanctuary, the Grand Basilica, and the Pope.
- Border Defense: Gallia shares a heavily fortified border with Ardenia in the north and the Undying Empire in the south. It is currently overseen by figures like Bishop Ingrid.
Government & Politics
The Holy Empire is infamous for its labyrinthine bureaucracy and internal politicking. Power is theoretically shared between the Emperor in Weimar and the Pope in Avagnon. However, because the Elector Houses (the Kurfürsten) must wait for the Pope's divine mandate, the Empire frequently suffers from political gridlock.
Currently, the Empire is experiencing severe economic starvation, largely due to the failure of the Second Radiant War, and the massive taxation required to fund the lavish lifestyles of the elite. This internal decay has forced the Empire to focus its attention on destabilizing its neighbors, such as the Kingdom of Ardenia, to exploit their Lumite resources.
Religion & Society
The Radiant Faith dictates every aspect of life in the Empire. Worship of the "Everlasting Sun" and adherence to the Old Scripture is mandatory.
- Treatment of Beastkin: The Empire's stance on non-humans is highly utilitarian. Beastkin who integrate into the economic machine (like the Caprines of Laasdorp or Canines in the capital) are tolerated and taxed. Those who refuse assimilation, like the Renjiran Tribe, are marginalized, persecuted, or treated as exotic resources for the slave trade.
- Demonic Exodus: The Church heavily persecutes "predatory" races. Hundreds of years ago, the Church's strict doctrines contributed to the mass exodus of the Demon races from Euvros.
- Suppression of Science: The Grand Sanctuary actively suppresses "heterodoxy"—science or magic that contradicts Church doctrine. Groundbreaking research on the true, parasitic nature of Lumite, or alchemical advancements, are frequently destroyed and their creators branded as heretics (e.g., Castillo, Estella Aria).
Military Forces
The Holy Empire fields one of the most formidable militaries in the world, combining heavy cavalry, firearms, and devastating divine magic.
- Templar Knights: The elite vanguard of the Radiant Faith, composed of heavily armored knights wielding holy magic.
- Arcane Artillerists & Musketeers: Standard army regiments utilizing early firearms and long-range offensive magic.
- The Inquisition: The Church's intelligence and enforcement branch, tasked with hunting heretics and managing "black operations" (such as funding the Children of the Eclipse).
- The Judges: The Ecclesiarchy's secret police and high executioners. Judges, such as Renalla, possess overwhelming individual power, utilizing high-tier magic (like Seventh Order Spatial Displacement) to act as one-man armies.
History
The First Radiant War & The Otherworlders
Over three centuries ago, the Holy Empire faced total annihilation when the Undying Empire, led by the Undying King, conquered the Holy Lands. Desperate, the upper echelons of the Papacy committed a forbidden act known as the Rituals of Crossing. They summoned six "Brave Saviors" from another dimension (Earth). While these Otherworlders shifted the tide of war briefly, they ultimately failed to defeat the Undying Empire. To hide their incompetence and heresy, the Church erased all records of the summoning, reducing the Otherworlders to a mere myth.
Treaty of Avagnon
Faced with total economic collapse and the threat of a schism, Pope Clementius VII was recently forced into a humiliating, secret peace treaty with Mahoma, the Caliph of the Undying Empire. In exchange for open trade routes and protection for pilgrims, the Holy Empire formally acknowledged their defeat and the Undying Empire's sovereignty over the Holy Lands.
The Shadow War in Ardenia
In the present day, the Holy Empire officially maintains a neutral stance regarding the Albion Empire's invasion of Ardenia. Unofficially, the Inquisition and rogue ex-Cardinal (like Castillo) funded the Children of the Eclipse—an astroturfing doomsday cult meant to cripple Ardenia from the inside so the Papacy could sweep in as "saviors" and claim Ardenia's Lumite mines.
Trivia
- The Empire operates as a direct mirror to real-world historical structures, functioning largely as an analog to the Holy Roman Empire, with the Papal States serving as its spiritual and political anchor.
- The political dynamic of the Empire perfectly mirrors the historical tensions between the Holy Roman Emperor and the Pope, particularly the Investiture Controversy.
