The Elves are a long-lived, highly adaptable humanoid race in the world of Rodinia. Renowned for their close connection to nature, magic, and beast taming, Elves are geographically and culturally divided into three distinct subraces across Euvros.

Biology and Life Cycle

Elves possess an average lifespan of 250 to 300 years. Their maturation process is divided into two distinct phases:

  • Initial Maturation: For the first 20 years of their lives, Elves grow and develop physically at a rate identical to normal humans.
  • Decelerated Aging: Upon reaching early adulthood (around age 20), their biological clock slows down significantly. They maintain a youthful, highly athletic physical prime for centuries before eventually showing signs of old age near the end of their natural lifespan.

Elven Subraces

Steppe Elves

The Steppe Elves are a nomadic subrace primarily inhabiting the vast, open plains of eastern Euvros.

  • Physical Characteristics: They typically have light-brown to brown hair, with relatively more slanted eyes compared to their boreal and northern kin.
  • Culture and Warfare: They are renowned as exceptional mobile archers and swift-moving infantry. They possess a deep, cultural connection to animals and were the first race in Rodinia to domesticate various beasts of burden, including horses and the regional ornithomimus-like mountbeasts (utilized as robust, fast alternatives to horses on the battlefield).
  • Demographics: They reside prominently in the Magyar Khanate, where they constitute approximately 30% of the total population.

Ruthenian Elves

The Ruthenian Elves are a forest-dwelling subrace native to the vast boreal forests of central-east Euvros.

  • Geography: Their homeland of Ruthenia is bordered by the northeast Pomeran region of the Holy Empire of Rodinia to the west, the southwestern territories of the Varyags to the north, and the Lędzianie Principality to the east.
  • Physical Characteristics: They are characterized by striking silver to white hair.
  • Culture: Unlike their nomadic steppe cousins, Ruthenian Elves live in deep harmony with the forest ecosystems, designing integrated settlements within the canopy. The support mage Lisa (Stark's second wife) originates from this subrace.

Karelian Elves

The Karelian Elves inhabit the northern borderlands of Euvros.

  • Geography: Their territory, known as Karelia, lies directly between the Samifjord Tribal Confederacy and the Kingdom of Varyag.
  • Physical Characteristics: They are characterized by blonde hair and sharp blue or green eyes.

Trivia

  • Historical Inspirations:
    • The Steppe Elves are heavily inspired by historical nomadic steppe societies of Earth, specifically the Huns, Cumans, and Kipchaks.
    • The Ruthenian Elves are based on historical Slavic tribes and cultures.
    • The Karelian Elves draw directly from historical Finnish peoples.
  • The Cursed Black-Hair Myth: Within Karelian Elven society, there is a prominent myth stating that black-haired Elves are cursed. Black hair is an extremely rare, almost biologically impossible trait among the elven species.
    • According to the archives of the Pioneer Association, there is only one officially documented case of a black-haired female Elf. This individual was completely unable to channel mana or cast magic, forcing her to rely purely on physical combat. She eventually worked as a physical mercenary within the cold regions of Samifjord.
